Change is afoot.

I’ve been thinking more and more about how and why I use the internet and the assorted litany of services in which I’ve invested both time and in some cases, money. It’s becoming more and more apparent to me that I don’t think I’m as concerned anymore with publishing in general, since I don’t have the time I once had, and I value personal communication more each day. I use Twitter for finding interesting things, and having conversations. Shouting into the endless void of the internet was cool for a while, but there are so many people who do it better and with more frequency that it makes my occasional missives perfectly missable.

And that’s really ok. Really.

That said, in going down this line of thinking, I realized a few things about what I like to do online. I like to write, even if I don’t get to do it very often. I really like taking pictures and being able to post them quickly from my phone, and sometimes with more care from my laptop. Those are the big ones. I like the conversations that start with other people, some of whom I’ve never met, and may never meet, who share with me their interests, and who appreciate mine.

So I apologize to all eight of you subscribers: the simple, text-based blog in which you’ve expressed a modicum of interest will soon be subsumed by a more comprehensive life-stream. In other words, while I’m really happy to share the things I see and think with others, I really want to use this space to catalogue all of the above for myself, so that I can go back and see at any point in time, in one place, what I was seeing and thinking.

I’m going to try and consolidate my network whoring to one or two nice places that are clean and easy to use, and simplify what has become an elaborate cross-posting dance that I just don’t want to continue anymore. Hopefully, since I really like Squarespace and the hosting, stats, and editing are so nicely integrated, I can make this the end point for just about everything.

In any event, I wanted to say something because this site has gone through a few iterations now, and so has my intention for it. I think that by being honest with myself about what I really want to see it become, and not what I think it should be (which may never actually happen), I’ll enjoy the entire experience more. And if you like the site better too, hey – great.

In the eternal words of Lethal Weapon’s Roger Murtaugh, “I’m too ooooold for this shit”.

It’s about time I started using all these tools to do something for me that I’ll be happy to look back on some day and that I won’t feel was a colossal waste of my time.

Technical note: the URL is going to change too – from mindofseth.com to sethclifford.me, in an effort to better reflect the holistic stream of posting, and because I just got tired of the other one. Seems kind of pretentious now. Thanks for tolerating it. Now, the only challenge will be making sure I don’t ruin the Google goodwill I’ve built on that URL up to this point…
